FIN 47 is a newer interpretation of the five-year-old accounting rule FAS 143. Issued in December 2005, FIN 47 requires publicly traded companies to disclose, and carry on their balance sheets, the future cleanup costs of Brownfields and other polluted real estate. Even though FIN 47 is currently only applicable to publicly traded companies, it is foreseeable that all companies will have to report these potential liabilities in the future.
