Brownfield clean-up puts expert in right place, right time, right industry

Sometimes, it is what you know and not who you know. Just ask Atul Pandey.

When Pandey came to the U.S. from India to get a graduate degree in engineering, he quickly dismissed mechanical engineering as a field of study believing that those projects can get overlooked in daily life.

He looked instead into environmental engineering because of the impact cleaning up contaminated properties can have on a community and his hunch that it could offer a long-term career.

"That made sense to me," the 37-year-old president of PANDEY Environmental LLC says. "You can have a positive change doing what I'm doing."

In August 2007, ODOD announced their financial support for Phase II activities to be performed by PANDEY to determine the environmental suitability of the property and the extent of remediation that may be necessary. The development of the property includes 250 apartments ranging in size from 500 to 1200 square feet and a 325 car parking garage. The site is conveniently located close to the Arena District, the Lennox Shopping Center, and adjacent to the Olentangy River.

In July 2007, the state awarded another PANDEY project in a struggling Columbus neighborhood the news their boosters wanted to hear: They'll be getting $3 million to clean up this old industrial site and clear the way for redevelopment. Mayor Michael B. Coleman called the project absolutely necessary to revitalize the neighborhood.

Federal Brownfields Income Tax Deduction - Extended to December 31, 2007


The federal income tax deduction for Brownfields properties has been extended to include eligible environmental costs incurred from December 31, 2005 to December 31, 2007, AND expanded to include both federally defined hazardous substances and petroleum products.

Businesses that own and cleanup contaminated properties may be eligible to take advantage of a federal income tax deduction for expenses incurred by December 31, 2007.
